"You Are Me," 2018 Borealis Festival
This public art installation was conceived as an intuitive tool for promoting interpersonal connection and empathy. To create this experience, I dreamed up an immersive optical illusion, utilizing a two-way mirror along with programmed directional lighting, to facilitate the appearance of a gradual transformation between two individuals observing themselves and their partner simultaneously.
The inspiration for this concept stemmed from a contemplative period, during which I delved into the dynamics of intimacy & empathy. Out of a meditation, this intuitive tool presented itself as a technological opportunity to finally, truly see oneself in another person.

The inception of this project was influenced by the pioneering work of Dr. Arthur Aron, particularly an empathy exercise centered around sustained eye contact between partners for an extended duration.
The realization of this installation was made possible through the gracious support of a public arts grant from the City of Seattle. Additionally, the expertise and unwavering dedication of my esteemed collaborators and co-creators, architectural lighting designers Amber Thimmesch and Erica Cartwright, along with Solid Apollo Lighting, played an indispensable role. Their remarkable contributions and commitment ensured not only the fruition of this project but also its thoughtful inclusivity by incorporating design elements for accessibility. Their efforts in accommodating individuals with disabilities are particularly commendable and deeply appreciated.
